A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) is one of the most acclaimed anime films of the 2010s, and almost every significant scene is set in real locations in Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture. Director Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation famously scouted every location in person. The Sunomata area canals, Tatebe Bridge (renamed Yume Bridge in the film), the local shrine, and the Ogaki summer festival grounds are all accessible to visitors. This is one of the most faithful anime-to-reality pilgrimages available.
Early August for the Ogaki Summer Festival, which appears in the film's emotional climax. Spring for cherry blossoms along the canal paths. The town is visitable year-round.
Ogaki is on the JR Tokaido Main Line, approximately 15 minutes from Nagoya (Shinkansen to Nagoya, then local train). Very accessible from Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo with a JR Pass.
All film locations are free to visit. Ogaki is very affordable for accommodation and food. Budget ¥10,000-15,000 for transport from Tokyo plus 1-2 days accommodation.
