Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) creator Hajime Isayama is from Hita City in Oita Prefecture, and the city has fully embraced its role as the spiritual home of the series. The medieval walled architecture of the Survey Corps headquarters is inspired by the Nördlingen city walls in Germany, but in Japan, the old castle town districts of Hita, Oita, and Ōita Prefecture offer the closest real-world parallel. The series has been formally adopted by Hita as a tourism mascot.
Spring for cherry blossoms across the historic districts. Autumn for comfortable temperatures and fall foliage. Hita's Mikuma River areas are beautiful in any season.
Hita City is in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu. Fly to Oita Airport then take a local bus or rent a car (recommended). A dedicated Attack on Titan tourism trail is marked in the city.
Most locations are free to visit. Budget ¥15,000-25,000 for flight to Oita plus 2-3 days accommodation. Hita is more affordable than Tokyo.
