Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and the anime adaptation has drawn international tourists to its real-world inspirations. The Taisho-era Tokyo scenes are set in Asakusa, one of Japan's best-preserved historic districts. Mount Sagami and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails in Wakayama inspire the demon mountains. The wisteria forests that repel demons are found at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi.
Late April to mid-May for wisteria season at Ashikaga Flower Park (the most Demon Slayer experience you can have). Asakusa is great year-round, best in autumn and spring. Book wisteria tickets months in advance.
Asakusa is on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, one stop from Ueno. Ashikaga Flower Park (Tochigi) is 90 minutes from Shinjuku on the Ryomo Express. JR Pass covers regional travel.
Asakusa is free to walk. Ashikaga Flower Park entry ¥1,000-2,500 depending on season. Allow a full day per major location.
