Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi) is Japan's highest-grossing film and a cultural landmark. While Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki drew inspiration from multiple real locations, certain places - particularly Dōgo Onsen in Matsuyama, the historic bathhouses of Gunma, and the old merchant town of Yanaka in Tokyo - strongly echo the Spirit World's aesthetic. The Jiufen alleys in Taiwan are also commonly cited as visual inspiration.
Autumn (September-November) for clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Dōgo Onsen is beautiful year-round. Avoid peak Golden Week (late April-early May) when locations are crowded.
Dōgo Onsen is in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture - fly to Matsuyama Airport or take a ferry from Hiroshima. Ghibli Museum (Mitaka, Tokyo) is 15 minutes from Shinjuku by train. A JR Pass helps with regional travel.
Dōgo Onsen bath entry starts from ¥1,500. Ghibli Museum tickets ¥1,000 (must book months in advance). Allow ¥30,000-50,000 for travel between regions.
