Sword Art Online (SAO) uses a mix of fantastical virtual worlds and real Japanese cities. The show's real-world scenes are set in Kawagoe in Saitama Prefecture - known as "Little Edo" for its preserved Edo-period merchant buildings - and in Yui's Forest scenes in various Saitama countryside locations. The GGO arc has scenes in Chofu and western Tokyo.
Kawagoe is beautiful year-round. The Kashiya Yokocho (Candy Alley) and Kurazukuri district are best visited on weekday mornings to avoid crowds. Spring for cherry blossoms along the historic streets.
Kawagoe is 40 minutes from Ikebukuro on the Tobu Tojo Line or Seibu Shinjuku Line. Very accessible as a half-day Tokyo day trip.
Kawagoe is a free-to-explore historic district. Budget for transport (¥400 each way from Tokyo) and optional Kawagoe museum entry fees. Excellent value as a day trip.
